Kade's Birth Story-Happy Birthday!

The morning of Wednesday January 16, 2008, I woke up around 2:00am with some bad cramping. "Is this labor?", I wondered? I didn't think it was as I've heard labor is the most painful thing a person can go through. Now I had visions of this being more painful than being abducted and cut into pieces (I watch too many scary movies). It was painful enough that I couldn't stay in bed so I went to my rocker in Kade's room and timed my contractions for 1 hour. I woke Chad up to let him know what I was doing and of course he fell back asleep and I was on my own...thanks a lot "labor coach". I got out my "What to Expect..." book and compared the length and duration of my contraction to what it said in the book. From what I can tell it was time to call the hospital. I called and they told me it was just early labor (if that) and I should take a warm bath and call them if it got worse. Well I just went back to bed since the thought of sitting in a tub while having this pain sounded like the last thing I wanted to do.
So back off to bed I went and woke up in pain again around 5:00am. I repeated my earlier scenerio, tell Chad...Chad fall asleep...Cherie in rocker...record contractions for 60 minutes. Hmmm...I didn't know for sure, am I or am I not in labor? Contractions were 3-4 minutes apart (I think) lasting over 60 seconds (I think). I basically let the pain do the talking and called the hospital to tell them I'm coming (not asking their opinion this time). They basically said I can come in for an assessment and if I wasn't dialated enough I'd have to go back home. I woke Chad (again) and told him to call work, he's not going and to get in the shower. I got ready and was more than eager to get me some of that pain medication! Chad insisted that I "eat because it might be a long day". So I'm sitting at our kitchen table around 7:00am eating toast and wanting to throw my plate at his head because "I Want To GO!".
We FINALLY get to the hospital. I was in so much pain when we got there and told Chad to get me a wheelchair. "You don't need a wheelchair" he said, you just want one because that is what they do on TV. So I waddled up to the 6th floor for my "assessment". Turns out that I was dialated to 5! No wonder I was in pain. So we got to stay and weren't sent back home. Thanks for the wheelchair Chad--he still hears about that one.
I was the lucky recipient of 2 epidurals...ouch. The first one wasn't threading the way she wanted it to so she did it all over again a little lower. So I had to sit still through some really long contractions hoping I wouldn't move and lose the loss of my legs-yikes!
We had a gorgeous view of Fargo from our room. There were windows from the floor to the ceiling the whole length of the wall. I even sat back and enjoyed the view for a while-thanks Epidural!
So I started contractions around 2:00am and gave birth to my beautiful son at 3:04pm. A good chunk of that was on "drugs" so it was actually a pleasant experience. I even asked Chad "Shouldn't I be yelling at you by now?" We had a little scare as Kade's cord was stuck by his shoulder so everytime I pushed, we'd lose his heartbeat. The Dr. ended up suctioning him out in a hurry and was ready for a C-section if the suction didn't work. He came out screaming (literally) like a little piggie and had a nice set of healthy lungs. We were placed in a beatiful family suite that had a double bed for Chad & I (the only one in the hospital). We ended up staying Wednesday morning through Saturday afternoon.
